AIEEE plans to go online

After CAT, AIEEE also plans to go online. In addition to regular paper based test, students may also get an option of writing the test online from 2011. The government has set up a committee of NIT directors to work out the feasibility of conductiong the exam online. Some members feel that online conduction of AIEEE will reduce the mounting logistic pressure on the board in holding the test. However, some ruled out the possibility of making the test online due to poor internet connectivity and non-availability of computers in rural areas.

“All students are not familiar with computers. Hence, written tests should be a part of the system,” director NIT Hamirpur IK Bhatt said.

The final report on the possibility of making the exam online will be submitted by the committee members by January 2010. Also, the members also plan to focus on considering Class XII exam results while preparing a merit list unlike the present system where merit list is prepared solely on the the basis of the entrance exam result.

Common Entrance Test for Deemed Universities: UGC

A committee set up by the UGC last year under the leadership of Pondicherry University Vice Chancellor Prof. J.A.K. Tareen after examining the admission process and fee structure in the institutes which were under UGC’s lens to acquire the deemed status suggested that a common entrance test for admissions must be conducted in all the deemed universities. With both the UGC and HRD’s review committee, a committee set up by the minister S.K.Sibal to study the functioning of all the deemed universities in the country, accepting to the reforms suggested by the UGC’s committee, UGC has issued directives to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to conduct admissions in the deemed universities on the basis of an entrance exam while the admission fees should be regulated according to the proposal setup by the fee fixation panels. “Admissions and high fees are two major accusations against the deemed universities. At least for medical and engineering programmes, the UGC committee is in favor of conducting an all-India based entrance exam for admissions while the deemed universities can conduct their entrance exams individually. The basic idea is to increase the transparency in the admission process,” said an official.

However, adding on to his comment he also cited that, “It has been recommended that the fees should be pre-determined either by a national- or a state-level fee fixation committee.”

Admissions to DTU on basis of AIEEE

From next academic session 2010-2011, the admissions to Delhi Technological University would be on the basis of AIEEE conducted by the CBSE. DU has 85% of seats reserved for Delhi candidates and 15% for outside Delhi students. While students for outside Delhi category has been admitted on the basis of rank obtained in AIEEE so far, the students from Delhi were selected on the basis of the rank obtained in the Combined Entrance Examination of DU. However from next year, admission of students from both the categories would be based on AIEEE rank.

NITs to reform AIEEE?

The ministry of HRD, as a part of crackdown on coaching centres, has already announced huge reforms in the education sector. Now it’s the turn of NITs to join the process. The NITs council has decided to reform its entrance examination system and in this regard a committee comprising NIT directors from Allahabad, Calicut and Agartala has been formed to suggest reforms in the examination system.

Currently NITs admit students on the basis of the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by CBSE. The committee, besides reviewing the examination structure, will look at the possibility of online exam, in addition to the regular pen and paper test being conducted at present and a report will be submitted by January.

NIT Council cohered with the IITs argument that coaching institutes had killed students’ initiative. The focus being on “cracking the exam” rather than showing aptitude. The council was of the view that proliferation of coaching schools had skewed the pattern of students being admitted to NITs. In this context, the committee will consider the possibility of giving weightage to class XII examination results.

A second committee, which will look into the curriculum framework, is also being set up. Courses will be revised in accordance with the current needs of industry and market as well as the future needs. This committee will comprise NIT directors from Thrichy, Surathkal, and Warrangal.

Common Counselling Plan for IITs & NITs, but not before 2011

As NITs are facing the vacant seats problem even after multiple conselling phases, the IITs and NITs are planning to start common counselling, which if comes in to effect would smoothen the admission process and reduce hardship of students. “There is a plan to have common counselling of IIT-JEE and AIEEE. But this may not happen before 2011,” an IIT director said. The IIT directors have discussed the issue with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal last month.

At present, since the IIT-JEE counselling and AIEEE counselling are held separately, students block seats in more than one institute and finally take admission in the institute of their choice and the result is vacancy of seats in some of the institutes.

One of the IIT directors said that the IITs have their own JEE committee which is studying the reforms to be brought in. The NIT Council, the apex body to take decision on matters of NITs, has also set up a committee to revisit the AIEEE and suggest any change required. “A decision on common counselling issue will be taken after both the IIT and NIT committees submit their reports on reforms in the entrance examination,” he said.

It is heard that the IIMs are also thinking along the same lines to conduct common counselling for admissions. At present, each IIM is holding its own counselling to take students from the CAT merit list.

Sibal’s Next Agenda: Online AIEEE ?

A committee consisting of three National Institutes of Technology (NIT) Directors has been constituted to look at the possibility of making AIEEE online in addition to the regular pen and paper test being conducted by the CBSE at present. This Committee is constituted during the first meeting of the NITs Council held here today under the Chairmanship of Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD), Mr. Kapil Sibal.

In addition to making AIEEE online, giving weightage to the Class XII Exam is also being considered by the committee. The Committee consisting of the Directors of NITs Allahabad, Calicut and Agartala will submit its report by January and will also look at the problem of seats across NITs staying vacant despite a number of rounds of counseling.

If implemented, it could mark the beginning of a new era in admission process in the country.
